There’s lots to see in and around Port McNeill! As wonderful as the Lodge is, we encourage you to go out to soak up some local culture and explore. Tell us what you’re interested in, and we’ll happily point you in the right direction.

The snug North Island community of Telegraph Cove, just a half-hour drive from Port McNeill, is rich with history and offers guests an opportunity to experience authentic west coast cuisine, premier whale watching tours and other outdoor activities.

Home of the World’s Largest Tree Burl

Home of the World’s Largest Tree Burl

The Ronning Burl, located next to the Port McNeill community hall, is a massive natural outgrowth, weighing in at approximately 24 tons, originally culled from a Sitka Spruce tree, brought to town in 2005. This burl is claimed to be the largest in the world, with an estimated age of over 525 years. The second-largest burl can be found five minutes north of town along Highway 19.

Located harbourside in Port McNeill, Devil’s Bath Brewery is a locally-inspired brewhouse and restaurant, offering small batch beers with a unique north island flair. The brewhouse takes its namesake from the nearby cenote, the Devil’s Bath, Canada’s largest flooded sinkhole located 45 minutes from town.

Outdoor Activities

Fishing is big in North Vancouver Island, but it isn’t the only way to experience the outdoors here! Ask us about the many other activities that you can partake in, and we can help coordinate rentals if you need them.

  • Known as the “gateway to the Broughton Archipelago,” Port McNeill offers visitors a remarkable opportunity to explore the waterways of BC’s largest marine park of tranquille islands, quiet inlets and wildlife encounters. Book a sea kayaking tour with the Telegraph Cove Sea Kayaking Company or charter a wildlife viewing tour with Silver King Ventures.
  • Several short walking trails surround the area, including the Cluxewe Salt Marsh Trail, Alert Bay’s Ecological Park boardwalk, the Harbour Seawall and the Lady Ellen Point Trail.
  • Across the bay, tour Malcolm Island by bike with Sointula Green Bike’s free rentals. Cruise the coastline or lead a tour through the village of Sointula.

If you’re hoping to find some time to decompress during your stay, we have you covered. The serene surroundings of The North Shore Lodge and the laid-back town of Port McNeill make it a perfect place to unwind.

  • Sink into the hot tub, craft a cocktail from the downstairs bar or wind down with a fireside evening beneath the stars. Relaxation is an encouraged mindset here at the Lodge.
  • Open May through September, the Port McNeill outdoor swimming pool is a refreshing haven for a relaxing summer swim, located in the heart of the community.
  • Follow the path at the end of our road, providing access to the Haddington Beach Trail, a tame and lush forest walk with serene beach access at several points along the out-and-back trail.
